The medal design for the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship has been selected.

Come May 2015, the world's best hockey players will compete for the right to wear beautiful medals made of galvanized metal and combined with faceted crystal.

"The regulations for the design of medals for the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship are exactly specified, but we believed that creative Czech artists would come up with an original idea. And we succeeded. I believe that the medals that we put around the necks of the best hockey players will be appreciated," said Tomas Kral, President of the Czech Ice Hockey Association.

The designer of the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship medals is artist Oldrich Sladek. The medals will be produced by Preciosa, one of the largest producers and exporters of Bohemian crystal.

"Hockey pucks around the world are made in the Czech Republic, so what other shape should be used for a medal at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship than the shape of the puck?” Sladek says. "The original assignment said to show national characteristics. Rather than just show them, it's better if they're used directly. Therefore, a polished Czech crystal stone from Jablonec nad Nisou will shine within the Czech flag on each gold, silver and bronze medal."

Obviously, as Sladek mentioned, medals will be made in the three traditional colours – gold, silver and bronze. The colour for the gold medals comes from a gold surfacing layer, the presence of palladium accounts for the silver and the bronze colour is created from the use of purple gold. The sign “2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship” is written on the perimeter of each medal.

The central crystal stone in each medal comes from a unique material known as Genuine Czech Crystal (R), which is made by Preciosa. This crystal, which can be sharpened into a desired shape, is known for its high internal cleanliness and very good optical attributes. The IIHF logo is to be brushed into the centre of the stone of every medal.

The basic dimensions of all medals are the same: an outer diameter of 76 mm, an inner diameter of 66 mm, a height of 25 mm and a weight of approximately 306 g.

The 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will take place in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic, from 1 to 17 May 2015.
