Teddy Purcell scores shootout winner, Oilers beat Flames 2-1

EDMONTON - Teddy Purcell scored the shootout winner as the Edmonton Oilers came away with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Mark Fayne also scored for the Oilers (18-23-5), who snapped a four-game losing streak and won for the first time at home against Calgary in their last eight attempts.

Sam Bennett replied for the Flames (20-20-3), who have won only once in their last four outings.

Calgary got on the board first, 11 minutes into the first period when Bennett took a feed from Mikael Backlund and then made a move before beating Oilers goalie Cam Talbot with a backhand shot for his 11th goal of the season.

The Oilers, outshot 14-8 in the first, picked up the pace in the second period and took a 22-19 lead in shots after 40 minutes, but the game remained 1-0 at the end of the period.

Edmonton got a goal from an unlikely source midway through the third to tie the contest as Taylor Hall won a faceoff back to Fayne, who sent his first of the season through traffic and past Jonas Hiller.

Talbot made 31 saves for the win while Hiller kicked out 35-of-37 shots in defeat.

The Oilers begin a two-game trip in Florida against the Panthers on Monday. The Flames continue their five-game trip in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Notes: It was the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams, with Calgary holding a 2-1 edge in the seasonal series entering the game… Forward Michael Frolik made his return for Calgary after missing more than a month with an upper-body injury. Scratched for the Flames were Lance Bouma (lower body) and Jiri Hudler, who recently re-injured his groin… Oilers forward Zack Kassian made his home debut after coming to the team in a trade with Montreal for goalie Ben Scrivens… Out for Edmonton were Connor McDavid (collarbone), Oscar Klefbom (lower body) and Andrew Ference (undisclosed), while Matt Hendricks served the final game of a three-game suspension for a hit on Florida's Aaron Ekblad.
