Bruins keep faith in coach Claude Julien, bring him back for 10th season

NHL, Boston Bruins

Claude Julien, the winningest coach in Boston Bruins history, will return for his 10th season, general manager Don Sweeney announced Thursday.

Asked during the team's annual end-of-season news conference whether Julien will remain as coach, Sweeney said, "Absolutely."

"I believe in Claude as a coach," Sweeney said.

It had been widely speculated that Julien, 55, would be fired after the team missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Julien guided the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup title in 39 years when the team defeated the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. Boston returned to the finals in 2013 but lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. The Bruins won the Presidents' Trophy in 2013-14 but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the playoffs.

Despite earning 96 and 93 points, respectively, the past two seasons, the Bruins failed to earn a playoff berth either year.

Julien, who is currently the longest-tenured coach with one team, has a 393-223-88 record in 704 games with the Bruins. He passed Art Ross as the club's all-time leader in wins with his 388th regular-season victory March 7 against the Florida Panthers. The winner of the Jack Adams Award in 2008-09, Julien owns a 512-309-10-111 record in 942 career NHL games coached.
