Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl will join the German national team at the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

After all administrative details have been cleared, Draisaitl will soon leave for Germany where he’s expected to arrive on Saturday morning.

“We’re glad that it worked out so quickly. Leon signalled after the lost playoff series with the Oilers that he very much wanted to play for Germany,” said national team coach Marco Sturm.

“At the moment I’m of course disappointed about being ousted in the playoffs,” Draisaitl said about the lost series against the Anaheim Ducks but is looking forward to the Worlds in his hometown. “I have followed the Worlds with one eye and now I’m happy that I can support my team in my hometown.”

Draisaitl was the Oilers’ scoring leader in the post-season with 6 goals and 16 points in 13 games. Only Pittsburgh’s Yevgeni Malkin has collected more points. Draisaitl also had 29 goals and 48 assists in 82 regular-season games, second on his team behind only Connor McDavid.

The 21-year-old will play his third World Championship after 2014 and 2016. It will be the first time he will play in his hometown as a professional player. He played here as a junior until he was 13 before continuing his junior career in Mannheim and with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders.
