OHL Roundup: A look at Sunday's games

With only four games remaning in the regular season, the Oshawa Generals finally assured themself of post-season play.

Lucas Lessio had a goal and an assist as Oshawa defeated the host Brampton Battalion 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Ontario Hockey Legaue action.

“It feels awesome to clinch that playoff spot,” said Lessio. “We have been underachieving most of the season but all that matters now is that we are in and it feels great.”

With the victory, Oshawa became the seventh team to secure a playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Daniel Maggio, Nicklas Jensen, Scott Laughton and Christian Thomas also scored for the Generals (30-28-6), who won their third straight game.

Mitchell Porowski had a goal and an assist for the Battalion (34-22-10), who sit fourth in the East, while Ian Watters added a single goal.

Kevin Bailie made 24 saves for the win as Matej Machovski allowed five goals on 21 shots in defeat.

Oshawa went 1 for 5 on the power play while Brampton failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Niagara 5, Kingston 2; Mississauga 6, Ottawa 3; Owen Sound Pymouth; Windsor 7, Sarnia 5; Guelph 6, Erie 4 and Kitchener 1, London 0.

At Brampton, Ont., Lessio scored 3:43 into the game to give the Generals a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Maggio doubled Oshawa's advantage 4:29 into the second period before Watters got the Battalion on the board at 10:21.

Jensen scored in the final minute of the period to make it 3-1 Generals heading into the final period.

Thomas scored on the power play at 4:09 of the third and Laughton added one more for Oshawa at 9:18.

Porowski scored at 19:17 for Brampton.

At Ottawa, Spenser Cobbold and Jamie Wise each had a goal and an assist as Mississauga (31-27-7) won its third straight game by doubling up the 67's (39-18-8).

At Plymouth, Mich., the Whalers scored four times on the power play, including two from Stefan Noesen, as they went on to edge Owen Sound (32-27-7).

Spitfires 7 Sting 5

At Windsor, Ont., Kerby Rychel scored his 37th and 38th goals of the season and Michael Clarke had a goal and three assists as the Spitfires (28-30-7) snapped their three-game slide with a win over Sarnia (33-25-7).

Storm 6 Otters 4

At Erie, Pa., Scott Kasmachuk had a goal and two assists and Brock McGinn scored twice as Guelph (28-31-6) took sole possession of the final playoff spot in the West by beating the Otters (10-49-6).

Rangers 1 Knights 0

At Kitchener, Ont., John Gibson stopped 37 shots for his first shutout of the season and Eric Ming scored as the Rangers (41-22-2) edged London (47-17-1).
