Stuart, McLeod sign extensions with Avalanche
Defenseman Brad Stuart and forward Cody McLeod have signed contract extensions with the Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche signed defensemen Brad Stuart to a two-year contract extension and forward Cody McLeod to a three-year contract extension Monday.

Financial terms were not released for the contracts but TSN reported Stuart's extension is worth $7.2 million, for a $3.6 million salary-cap charge. ESPN.com reported the total value of McLeod's is $4 million, for a $1.33 million annual cap charge.

Stuart and McLeod are entering the final season of their current contracts and would have been unrestricted free agents after the 2014-15 season. Their new contracts begin next season. Stuart's current contract also carries a $3.6 million cap charge. McLeod's current contract carries a $1.15 million cap charge.

"Cody has been an Avalanche his entire career," Avalanche executive vice president and general manager Joe Sakic said. "He brings grit, energy and passion to the rink every single day. We are excited to have him under contract for another three years.

"Brad is a steady, experienced defenseman who is a solid addition to our blue line."

The Avalanche acquired Stuart in a trade with the San Jose Sharks on July 1 for a second-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and a sixth-round pick in 2017.

Stuart, 34, is entering his 15th season in the NHL. He had 11 points in 61 games with the Sharks last season. He has 322 points and a plus-14 rating in 985 games played with the Sharks, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Falmes and Los Angeles Kings.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2008.

McLeod, 30, is entering his eighth NHL season, all with the Avalanche. He has 50 goals, 91 points and 978 penalty minutes in 467 games. His 978 penalty minutes are the most in Avalanche history and sixth-most in franchise history dating back to when the franchise was known as the Quebec Nordiques.
